About the Role - Korero mo te Turanga

As a Senior / Animal Welfare Inspector you will be expected to deliver a range of work to ensure animal welfare complaints are investigated appropriately.

You will require sound legislative knowledge, good problem-solving skills and have excellent communication skills.

Each day will provide variety, as you work both in an office and in the field, meeting new people every day, while making a difference in ensuring all aspects of animal welfare compliance across Aotearoa New Zealand.In this role you will :

• Ensure investigation processes and procedures are followed.
• Manage animal welfare complaints in the primary production sector.
• Monitor production animal facilities for compliance with animal welfare legislation.
• Apply critical thinking to proactively identify areas of non-compliance in the Animal Welfare and NAIT sectors.
• Work with other Animal Welfare Inspectors and NAIT Officers to prepare and present robust prosecution cases where non-compliance is identified.
• Promote good animal welfare and NAIT practices.
• Build and sustaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders including MPI Legal, Investigations and other sector compliance teams as well as SPCA and NZ Police.
• Gain practical working knowledge of relevant legislation to investigation and compliance activities.
• Lead and support investigations in a compliance environment is desirable.
• Hold statutory appointments under both Animal Welfare and NAIT legislation.
• Support MPI's response capability during adversity, civil defence, and emergency situations.

About the Team - Mo to matou Ropu

The Animal Welfare and NAIT Compliance group sit within Agriculture & Investment Services.

The Napier team are based in Napier and cover the greater Hawkes Bay.

We are a part of the wider Central Region which includes teams in Tarankai, Whanganui / Manawatu and Wellington.

Our team supports MPI to pursue high standards of biosecurity and animal welfare in order to grow the value of New Zealand's food and fibre sector.

Our role includes seizing export opportunities for our food and fibre sector, improving sector productivity, ensuring the food we produce is safe, increasing sustainable resource use, and protecting New Zealand from biological risk.
