You will be able to confidently and successfully work with a range of subject matter experts to identify and develop new and better ways to achieve regulatory outcomes.
You will facilitate innovative approaches to problems, particularly those that improve accessibility and compliance, reduce complexity and minimise costs.In this role you will : Lead and contribute to regulatory reform initiatives that strengthen New Zealand's biosecurity systemProvide strategic advice and thought leadership on regulatory performance, stewardship, and system designCollaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure our biosecurity regulatory frameworks are effective, risk-based, and future-readySupport the development of tools, guidance, and capability-building activities that enhance regulatory practiceMentor and support team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performing cultureThis is a dynamic and impactful role where you'll help shape the future of biosecurity regulation in Aotearoa.About You - MouTo be successful in this role, you will bring : A tertiary qualification in public policy, law, economics, political science, or a related disciplineAt least 5 years' experience in regulatory, policy, or public sector roles with exposure to regulatory systems and stewardshipStrong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to assess complex systems and identify opportunities for improvementDemonstrated ability to undertake robust policy analysis and provide implementation support for regulatory changesExcellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts into clear, accessible adviceProven ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across diverse teams and stakeholdersAn understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its relevance to regulatory system design and stewardship is highly valuedYou do not need to meet all of the role requirements to apply.

Our directorate is responsible for managing the pre-border part of New Zealand's biosecurity system by stopping pests from coming into the country.The Regulatory and Risk Assurance team focuses on ensuring the directorate's regulatory activities are consistent, cohesive, and calibrated.
