About the team
Our HVDC and Operational Engineering group are the custodians of the grid asset service that delivers to our customers.
The group collaborates and works to ensure that safety, health, sustainability, and sound commercial acuity are at the forefront of providing continuous transmission for New Zealand.
The Primary Assets Operational Engineering team provides real-time specialist engineering advice and recommendations for managing operational issues for primary assets.
The team is also accountable for developing and managing maintenance strategies as well as undertaking technical investigations to ensure primary assets meet the performance criteria for Transpower and customers.

The team delivers services to support primary assets including :
Developing and managing maintenance procedures and specifications
Supporting service delivery through technical management, development and / or review of technical designs, and on-site build and commissioning support
Providing insights on asset health and capability to other business functions
The opportunity a new team leader role due to electricity demand growth!
Lead a team of seven professionals plus graduates, based predominately in Wellington (including three Principal Engineers) responsible for the operational performance and maintenance outcomes for HVAC substation assets including ~ 173 Substations nationwide and primary assets (including transformers, circuit breakers, instrument transformers, Air Break Switches, and gas-insulated switchgear).
The team is accountable and responsible for operational performance of HVAC substation assets through the provision of timely and accurate operational engineering advice as well as the development and management of maintenance procedures.
Working with the Lines and Cables Operational Engineering Manager you'll build relationships across Transpower with our National Grid Operations Centres, Regional Service Managers and Asset Planning, and with our contracted service providers.
Bring your experience in high voltage substation, generation, distribution or with large grid connected assets, and take your experience to the next level.
This is a national role where you'll work closely with senior leaders across the business and be integral to ensuring a reliable supply of electricity to Aotearoa.
What will you bring?
Outstanding technical and people leadership skills, underpinned by a relevant tertiary engineering qualification and well-developed system thinking.
Known for being nimble and considered, inclusive and decisive when working with your team at pace, you aren't afraid to make a call based on information to hand e.g. whether an asset can go back into service.
To be shortlisted, your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate :
Leadership experience including team and individual capability development, driving continuous improvement, and coaching technical specialists.
As this is an operational role you will be comfortable being part of our on-call roster roughly one week in six.
High voltage primary assets (substations) engineering experience and in-depth understanding of the criticality of those assets for service delivery.
Exposure to, or in-depth experience of site risks and safety, quality assurance and improvement, reliability management, commercial and service provider relationship management
Highly effective written and verbal communication and relationship management, including advocacy and influencing to achieve results.
Continuous improvement of service delivery performance, including safety, quality, risk mitigation and commercial outcomes.
Sound knowledge of asset management principles underpins your practice.
CPEng or an international equivalent whilst not essential, is desirable.
