About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga

Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education is looking for two Advisors on Deaf Children to be part of our close-knit, community-focused team. Based in one of our offices – Kaitaia, Kerikeri or Whangārei where we offer a fantastic lifestyle and work-life balance opportunity.

As an Advisor on Deaf Children, you will play a critical role in our region’s Learning Support team by :

  • Providing high quality learning support in accordance with the Ministry’s practice framework, He Pikorua, to babies and children who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families.
  • Strengthening the capability of the adults around the babies and children who are best placed to support their learning.
  • Providing professional support and guidance to families, schools and teachers, building and strengthening the capacity of those who are best placed to support the learning of these babies and children.
  • Understanding the families’ needs, collaboratively planning, supporting and monitoring the implementation of intervention plans.
  • Working as part of a trans-disciplinary team where a child’s needs are complex.

Salary range : $90,566 - $106,016 per annum + 3% KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you | Mōhou ake

To be successful in this role, you will be a dynamic, team player. You will have both the passion and expertise to support excellent educational outcomes for Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Children within our region.

  • A Master of Special Education (Sensory Disabilities / Hearing Impairment) or a Diploma of Advisor on Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Children or
  • A Bachelor of Speech and Language Therapy Honours degree with at least Second Class Honours (or equivalent), or
  • A Master of Speech and Language degree having achieved at least a B grade average (or equivalent).
  • Please note, if you do not have any of these qualifications but you have a teacher of the deaf or equivalent qualification with at least two years’ experience in that role, we can consider you.
  • If you are a teacher of deaf or Speech and Language Therapist, but you will be required to complete the Master of Special Education (Sensory Disabilities / Hearing Impairment) within four years after appointment.
  • Experience and knowledge of New Zealand Sign Language
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with children, young people and their families and teachers across a diverse range of settings.
  • The ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi | The Treaty of Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga.
  • A full driver’s licence.
  • The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

    Te Mahau | Te Tai Raro is a frontline group. Our frontline groups will collectively provide leadership and integrated services to the sector and others. This includes services, such as learning support and education advice and regulation functions for schools and early learning services.

    Learning Support ensures that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education. Our Learning Support specialists work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.
