Job description

We have the opportunity to join the Youth Justice team of Rotorua at our Te Kohanga Remand Home as a Casual Residential Youth Worker.

What is Te Kohanga Remand Home? It is a restorative group home, working with rangatahi aged 14 to 17 who are on remand in their processes with the Youth Court. This home operates 24 / 7, 365 days a week in tandem with the Te Maioha Youth Justice facility. We offer a variety of interesting, educational, and fun activity programmes for our young people while they stay with us. They work alongside our partners to build high-trust relationships and help tamariki develop the skills, behaviours, and attitude they will need to meaningfully contribute to their whānau and their community. They understand that the causes of offending are complex, and that successfully dealing with young offenders demands action beyond simple punitive measures.

  • Studied psychology, social sciences, teaching, social work, sports, or arts and you want to bring those learnings to life in meaningful way by applying your skills to rangatahi in need of your help every day (beneficial but not required). Life learnings are equally important, and we value the life experience of our staff bring to this practical and challenging role.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work with others and contribute to a supportive and inclusive team.
  • Knowledge of Tikanga and Te Reo which is an advantage - Oranga Tamariki is committed to developing our kaimahi to develop this important capability.
  • In this role you need to have the right to work in New Zealand, either as a NZ citizen or permanent resident, or by holding a valid work visa. You also need to have a full, clean New Zealand driver's license as you will be required to drive as part of your job.
