Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science and Heritage

Te Manawa is seeking a new Senior Manager Exhibitions. This is an exciting opportunity to bring your experience in exhibition delivery and people leading to the fore.

You will be responsible for resourcing and guiding the mahi of our Exhibition Designer and Technicians, supporting them in their contributions to our varied exhibition programme across Art, Heritage and Science. Working closely with our Senior Manager Curatorial and Collections, you’ll be a champion of cross-team collaboration, a scheduling-superstar and time-management marvel, with the ability to prioritise resourcing and budgets to juggle our busy calendar with innovation and flexibility.

We’re looking for someone with 4+ years of practical experience in GLAM exhibition making—or a related industry—with the ability to think creatively and problem-solve. An understanding of Te Tiriti, project management, design principles, AV technology and collection care, alongside a willingness to get your hands dirty on the exhibition floor when needed, would all be a plus!

This is a senior role that sits on our Management Team. You’ll contribute to the effective kaitiakitanga of Te Manawa through leadership, collaboration and commitment to our organisation’s strategic goals and vision.

Te Manawa provides relevant and engaging experiences in art, science, and heritage to the people of Palmerston North and beyond. Through caring for and growing the collection and developing an inspiring calendar of exhibitions, events and learning programmes we ensure the connection of people and stories within our communities.

Main Purpose

  • Lead and manage the Exhibitions Team, exhibition delivery and related budgets
  • Project manage the delivery of exhibitions with complex build components.
  • Ensure and enable cross-team collaboration
  • Oversee and be involved in the delivery of exhibitions, including touring exhibitions, and related Health & Safety
  • Manage and prioritise exhibition teams resourcing
  • Work with the Senior Manager Curatorial & Collections to develop the exhibition schedule and seek feedback from other team members as needed
  • Work with lead exhibition designer to ensure layouts and drawings meet technical requirements
  • Work with the Facilities Manager and Lead Collection Manager to provide staff resource to help with property maintenance, collection care and object freighting as needed.
  • Monitor, track and report on outcomes of exhibition delivery in alignment with operational needs and strategic targets
  • Work proactively as part of the senior management team
  • Any other activity that contributes to the stewardship of Te Manawa through leadership, collaboration and commitment to the organisation’s strategic goals and vision.

Qualifications / Experience

  • Tertiary qualification or the equivalent knowledge gained through experience
  • 5+ years experience in managing people and projects, working across multiple areas
  • 4+ years technical experience in a museum or gallery environment, or related trade experience
  • Strong technical aptitude across electronics, AV, and lighting systems, with advanced computer software proficiency.
  • Sound working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of workshop machinery and equipment
  • A current NZ driver’s licence
  • Experience handling objects and / or artworks is desirable
  • Capabilities

  • A peoples’ person with leadership skills, who develops productive and positive relationships with a diverse range of people
  • Excellent communicator and adaptable project manager, adept at handling multiple deadlines
  • A collaborator, with a high degree of initiative and excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to budget and do financial reporting
  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Tikanga Māori, with experience in building relationships and working with iwi.
  • Sound spatial awareness, physically fit to step in, support and / or guide technicians
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety practices and employer obligations
  • High level of computer literacy
  • Key Relationships

    Internal : All staff, in particular Chief Executive and Senior Managers, Facilities Manager

    External : Security, Contractors, Artists

    Hours of Work

    The job holder will be expected to work the hours necessary to fulfil the obligations of the position to the expected standard. This is anticipated to be around 40 hours per week but will depend on the demands of the position at any given time.
