Senior Reporter - BusinessDesk

THE OPPORTUNITY :

BusinessDesk has an opportunity for a senior reporter to expand coverage in what is already New Zealand’s fastest growing business newsroom.

This fulltime role will work with the BusinessDesk team to break, develop and report corporate news amongst a range of companies, with a particular focus on professional services and investment.

The core of this role involves either the existing ability or the ability to understand what is going on in New Zealand’s corporate community including understanding what is going on the public and private markets.

Your focus is on informing the business community on the competency of its support services including but not limited to accountants, lawyers, consultants, engineers, analysts and bankers.

You will be able to quickly learn and become confident with the operations of the major professional services firms and report on financial statements, strategic updates and key announcements.

This is the bedrock for forming relationships with across the business community with a view to breaking original news and providing sophisticated analysis of corporate activity.

You will highlight firms showing promise to become fast-growing, that already have scale and are significant to NZ’s economic performance, or that are experiencing difficulties or lax disclosure.

You will also scrutinise the relationship between government and the private sector, such as the use of consultants.

ABOUT YOU :

• At least 5+ years working journalism experience
• Ability to break and develop great business stories
• Demonstrated ability to develop a strong network of contacts and sources of tips, especially in assigned specialist topic round and areas
• Knowledge and experience of NZ media law
• Ability to work out of Auckland and Wellington offices preferred but not essential.
