Join Stats NZ in guiding ethical data practices across the organization, ensuring that data governance, AI development, and digital transformation uphold tikanga, protect Maori data sovereignty, and foster trust with iwi, hapu, and Maori communities.
What the role looks like
Lead data ethics initiatives across the organisation.
Work closely with stakeholders, data teams, and the public to embed Maori perspectives.
Develop guidelines and conduct training on Nga Tikanga Paihere, the Algorithm Charter, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Support digital transformation projects with a focus on cultural competence.
Prepare plain-English summaries of complex data concepts for non-technical audiences.
Engage with iwi, hapu and Tiriti partners to align projects with Maori values.
Key Qualifications
Experience in a data-ethics or related advisory role across multiple organisations.
Strong understanding of Te Ao Maori, tikanga, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Familiarity with Nga Tikanga Paihere, the Algorithm Charter and other Maori data frameworks.
Demonstrable experience working with Maori, iwi, hapu and Tiriti partners.
Ability to translate technical data topics into plain English.
Knowledge of government machinery, procedures and related processes.

Starting salary : $118,609 – $143,726 + superannuation.
