About Dunedin Hospital and the Southern District
Dunedin Hospital is the flagship medical facility of the Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora - Southern, serving the Southern region of New Zealand. As the largest tertiary hospital in the district, Dunedin Hospital provides a comprehensive range of healthcare services to a population of over 350,000 people spread across a vast and scenic region.
The Southern District encompasses the Otago and Southland regions, offering a rich blend of urban and rural communities. Dunedin, the region's main city, is known for its beautiful coastal landscapes, a vibrant arts and culture scene, and an excellent work-life balance. It is a popular destination for families, nature enthusiasts, and those who enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and water sports.
As part of Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora - Southern, Dunedin Hospital provides vital services for patients from surrounding smaller hospitals, including Southland Hospital in Invercargill, Queenstown Lakes District Hospital, and rural health centers. This broad coverage provides a dynamic environment for clinical practice, with a wide variety of cases ranging from complex tertiary care to more routine cases in smaller communities.
