Professional Growth : Elevate your career through a range of learning and development opportunities at Palmerston North City Council.

Benefits : We do more than just pay you a salary too.

We have awesome benefits to support you including 5 weeks annual leave

About the role

We're looking for a passionate, community-focused Heritage Programmes Coordinator to join the Heritage Team at the Palmerston North City Library.

Based at our Central Library, this role is all about designing and delivering lifelong learning opportunities, events, and initiatives that make our city's history and heritage accessible, engaging, and inspiring.

If you're a skilled communicator with experience in heritage, education or public libraries, and you love working alongside people to spark interest and connection to history and heritage, we'd love to hear from you.

This is a full-time role, 40 hours per week, including regular evenings and weekend shifts.

Your focus in this role will include :

Fostering enduring relationships with mana whenua, iwi, diverse communities, educational institutions, heritage interest groups, historians and researchers to co-design programmes that reflect our city's evolving identity.

Developing and delivering Aotearoa New Zealand, Pacific and heritage focussed lifelong learning programmes that support community engagement in the use of both the Ian Matheson City Archive and Manawatu Heritage.

Planning and coordinating Local History Week, Heritage Month, military and wider heritage commemorations – from scheduling and venue logistics to liaising with speakers and helping to create promotional content.

Supporting community members with genealogy and research requests, using resources like Manawatu Heritage, PapersPast, Ancestry, and other heritage collections.

About you

You'll be someone who's comfortable moving between programme design, front-facing delivery, and partnership development – all while keeping the community at the heart of your work.

To thrive in this role, you'll ideally bring :

A tertiary qualification in history, heritage, library and information management, education – or equivalent practical experience.

Experience in heritage programme delivery and event coordination.

Research skills and familiarity with genealogy tools (e.g. Ancestry, BDM records, PapersPast).

An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in both heritage and public library contexts.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, from stakeholder liaison to preparing engaging promotional materials.

Strong digital skills, with the ability to utilise a wide range of evolving technologies.

The ability to work collaboratively and independently, manage time across varied workstreams, and respond creatively to new opportunities.

About us

Palmerston North (or as we like to call it, Palmy) is a growing, innovative and exciting city.

With small city benefits and big city ambition, Palmy has secured its place on the map as a creative and exciting city, with leading innovation and developments!

We're also a future-focused city who cares about enhancing our natural and built environment.

Our future looks bright; it looks vibrant and progressive.

Competitive salary between $73,051 and $85,942 plus a 3% Kiwisaver employer contribution (where eligible)

5 weeks annual leave and a community service day

Long service leave after qualifying periods

Paid parental leave benefits
