This is a rare opportunity for an exciting role working hands on with our New Zealand native and endemic avian wildlife.
We are seeking a dynamic, fast thinking person who works well with birds and people to join our team.
The candidate will have critical care nursing skills, be highly empathetic and passionate about our avian wildlife and environment.
This position is a diverse and multi-faceted role with responsibilities and hours that change seasonally based on the needs of our patients and organisation.
Native Bird rescue is proud to be an Immigration NZ Accredited Employer and have two roles available, a full time permanent and a seasonal contract role.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include :
Provide excellent customer service over the phone, in person and via email including patient updates.
Perform all avian wildlife related duties from admission to release including triage, examinations, diagnosis, administering medications, critical care treatments and humane euthanasia.
Provide assistance to veterinary staff including microscopy, parasitology, anaesthesia, physiotherapy, x-rays and bloodwork.
Manage the daily care and cleaning of birds in the species specific habitats along with yearly maintenance and habitat creation as required.
Coordinate and train volunteers and ensure Health and Safety requirements are followed.
Maintain accurate medical and photographic records.
Assist with provisioning for medical and nutritional requirements for over 35 species.
Assist with administration as required, including development of SOP's.
Assist in the development and implementation of fundraising strategies and activities.
Comply with DOC permit requirements, WReNNZ minimum standards and MPI animal welfare laws.
Maintain great relationships with rescuers, donors and supporters.
Represent our wildlife and our organisation in a professional and positive manner.
Qualifications and Experience
A minimum 3 years' experience in avian wildlife rehabilitation, avian vet nursing, conservation bird handling or the breeding of native and endemic bird species is required.
Experience hand-rearing wild chicks will be considered an advantage.
Excellent observation skills, attention to detail and clinical hygiene.
A good knowledge of New Zealand bird identification, behaviour, habitat, and conservation.
A sound knowledge of conservation issues including human-wildlife conflicts and resolution is a plus.
Able to work indoors, outdoors in all weather and in the field.
Ability to use Google and Microsoft products, Apple iPhone and computers a bonus.
Excellent communication, advocacy, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
Experience in administrative tasks and fundraising is a plus.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Work Schedule and Terms of Employment
Availability to work on average 40 hours a week under a TOIL (Time off in Lieu) system.
This will include rostered split-shifts, weekends and public holidays.
Absolutely essential that you are available to work during the busy Summer Season.
Rostered hours from Monday to Sunday and On-call duties for emergencies are required.
A valid driver\'s license and first aid certificate will be required.

Native Bird Rescue is a 5 star wildlife rehabilitation facility with the focus on conservation.
We have an on-site vet clinic including digital x-ray facilities.
We specialise in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick, injured, and orphaned fully protected avian wildlife species.
Including a special project with korora / little penguins from the entire Auckland / Hauraki Gulf region.
Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, release, and provide advocacy, education and research on behalf of our taonga species.
