About our group | Mō te roopu

Compliance, monitoring, and enforcement (CME) is an integral part of the EPA’s work to protect the environment and the health outcomes of New Zealanders. CME activities are a core part of the EPA’s regulatory functions and sit alongside statutory decision‑making processes, such as those for hazardous substances and marine applications. CME plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and contributes directly to the EPA’s strategic direction.

We help everyone, from small businesses to large organisations, understand and comply with environmental regulations. We do this through education, engagement, monitoring, investigation, and enforcement. This benefits the environment, the economy, and communities, and allows us to focus our resources on the most important environmental issues.

Our multi‑disciplinary team of compliance, monitoring and enforcement officers work together to uphold New Zealand’s environmental regulatory regime for the good Aotearoa today, and for future generations.

About the role | Mō te tūnga

You’ll be part of a small, collaborative team responsible for delivering intelligence‑led insights that inform compliance, monitoring, and enforcement decisions. You’ll work across a wide range of regulatory areas, from hazardous substances to marine activities, and contribute to strategic risk assessments, investigations, and performance reporting.

This role suits someone who thrives in complexity, knows when “good enough” is good enough, and can make sound judgments based on partial information. You’ll be comfortable working independently, while also contributing to team culture and shared goals.

About you | Mōhou ake

• Formal training in intelligence analysis (e.g. NZDF, NZ Police, tertiary qualification in intelligence studies)
• Experience in regulatory, enforcement, or investigative environments
• Strong critical thinking and analytical skills
• Ability to interpret and communicate complex information clearly
• Confidence working with ambiguity and incomplete datasets
• Initiative, curiosity, and a pragmatic mindset
• Understanding of matauranga Māori or willingness to develop cultural competence

There Are Extra Benefits To Working At The EPA

Salary range

$74,582 - $111,874 per annum (midpoint $93,228). This is the full salary range. Appointments will likely be made at or below the midpoint of this range, depending on skills and experience. An appointment at the midpoint assumes 100% competency in the role, with the full band covering a range of 80% - 120%.
