Senior Intelligence Analyst (Senior Customs Officer Grade 2) – Tauranga

New Zealand Customs ServiceTauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
5 days ago
Job description

Be part of our intelligence hub, identifying risks to our border — and help stop threats from reaching our shores.

We are looking for a motivated person to join our Customs Intelligence Unit. You will either have knowledge of customs / the border environment or have experience in intelligence.

You will be part of the wider Intelligence, Investigations and Enforcement group based in Tauranga and you will report to the Supervising Customs Officer of the team. You will generally work within regular hours — Monday to Friday. The salary range for this role is $82,894 – $106,618.

About You

  • You will have excellent attention to detail and experience in high‑level reporting.
  • You are experienced in applying the Intelligence Cycle including risk management processes.
  • You have a natural curiosity and talent for finding patterns and anomalies.
  • You are experienced working with large data sets and using analytical tools like Nexus, I2 Charts etc.
  • You understand information security principles (classifications, caveats, handling and sharing of information).
  • You thrive working under pressure.
  • You love building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • You’re an experienced report writer who produces high‑quality intelligence reporting.
  • You’re comfortable giving briefings to all levels.

Ideally you will have intelligence experience having worked as an analyst, and have the ability to learn the operational environment at customs. This role is intellectually challenging and requires individuals who are conscientious and adaptable and comfortable interpreting legislation.

Senior customs officers must take responsibility in managing their own and others' skills, knowledge and expertise to ensure a multi‑skilled team approach. You will also encompass the leadership skills to coach and mentor others in the team, and have the ability to act up as a Supervising customs officer when they are away.

We’re looking for people who care about their team and work well with others — you’re approachable, supportive and willing to help. You will have the interpersonal savvy skills to be able to work in a multi‑agency environment and to lead and assist with operations.

Working at Customs

Our people get on‑the‑job training, formal courses and leadership programmes and the chance to move across diverse roles. We foster an inclusive and supportive team environment with vibrant social and cultural groups. We also support flexible working — talk to us about how we can help you achieve your flexible working goals within our operational requirements. Our people get discounted health insurance, free on‑site gyms (in some locations) and three days of service holidays in addition to four weeks of annual leave.

How to Apply

If successful, you will need to obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret level national security clearance. To obtain this clearance you must be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in NZ at time of application, or meet the specified absence criteria.

You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level. Already having Top Secret clearance is a benefit, but not a requirement.

Due to the nature of customs work you must have a clear police record. Successful applicants are also required to pass a medical assessment and drug test and must hold a full NZ driver’s licence.

You will be asked to outline your relevant skills and experience and answer some competency‑based questions. The online application process takes a bit of time and requires you to provide examples of previous work – specific questions are asked in the online process. It’s best to set aside some time when you won’t be interrupted.

If shortlisted, you will be asked to complete online psychometric testing as part of the process.

Applications close on Sunday 16 November 2025 at 5pm.
