About the Team / Service / Location

The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at Counties Manukau serves a culturally diverse population of approximately 600,000 people across East and South Auckland.

Reflecting the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we aspire to having a workforce reflective of the communities we serve and aim for equitable outcomes for all.

We are home to the National Burns Centre, and receive tertiary regional referrals for acute spinal injuries, mangled limb, plastic surgery, hands, maxillofacial surgery and rigid bronchoscopy.

For the local people of East and South Auckland we deliver general surgery, vascular, orthopaedics, urology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, burns, plastics and gynaecology services.

We provide approximately 32,000 anaesthetic episodes a year.

Up to 10% of our patients are low complexity paediatrics and our tertiary obstetric centre delivers over

  • babies annually.

Our anaesthetists work across both sites where HNZ Counties Manukau provides surgical services.

Middlemore Hospital is a busy 800-bed tertiary-level teaching hospital with 14 operating theatres.

8km away Manukau Surgical Centre, at Manukau Health Park, provides an additional 10 theatres for lower complexity, short-stay surgery with a further 4 theatres in construction.

At Manukau Surgical Centre there are 60 post-surgical beds, an Anaesthetic Pre-assessment Clinic and an Anaesthetic-led four-bed 'Perioperative Care Unit' that provides close observation and 2 : 1 nursing ratio.

In addition, the anaesthetic department provides a small but increasing amount of off-the-floor work in MRI, CT, interventional radiology, a newly built gastroenterology and respiratory procedural suite, and procedural sedation for pacemaker insertion in the cardiac catheterisation lab.

We also provide acute and complex pain management across both sites and some of our anaesthetists participate in a busy outpatient chronic pain service.

We are a friendly department with a culture of continuous improvement.

We have weekly morbidity and mortality meetings and have an active internal education program.

Our department has special interest subspecialty groups and representation on a number of hospital committees and we participate in the ANZCA Clinical Trials Network.

We are a training hospital, with 35 trainees, and our SMOs actively participate in College roles, including supervisors of training, examiners, and ANZCA committees.

You can look forward to a warm welcome and strong support from colleagues.
