Job description

Family Home and Domestic Help Relievers Tauranga and Hamilton

2 casual positions available to join our team as a Family Home reliever in our Waikato region.

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is committed to putting tamariki first. We believe aroha is vital; we respect the mana of people; we are tika and pono . We value whakapapa and recognize that oranga is a journey.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

Waikato operates 5 Family Homes where are cared for by 2 Family Home Caregivers. When caregivers have breaks of about 2 to 15 days, Family Home Relievers continue to provide routine care and maintain a safe, caring, responsible, and supportive family environment 24 / 7. Our Family Homes are smoke-free homes, which is important to consider when applying.

The role of a family home reliever includes cooking, shopping, recreation activities, helping with homework, and supervision. Upon starting your shift, the caregiver will provide a detailed handover, and a designated social worker will liaise with each home, providing regular clinical supervision. Care plans are developed for tamariki, and relievers are expected to ensure activities continue as planned and follow handover instructions.

Ideal candidates are flexible to be available 24 hours a day for a minimum of 4 consecutive days and committed to maintaining a safe, caring, and supportive family environment.

This role can suit someone seeking occasional work or more frequent hours, depending on availability.

Key requirements of the role include :

  • Must hold a current full, clean driver’s licence (restricted licence okay if obtained prior to starting) as you may need to drive fleet vehicles.
  • Ability to pass police and Oranga Tamariki vetting (a clean slate does not apply).
  • Previous experience in social services or working with children and young people is advantageous.
  • Understanding of cross-cultural practices, especially tikanga Māori and Pacific cultures.
  • Resilience to support children and young people with varied needs.
  • Positive role model qualities.
  • Calm and professional manner.
  • Excellent listening, oral, observation skills, and ability to write handover notes.

We encourage applications from individuals of diverse backgrounds and expertise.

Nōu te rourou | What's in it for you

Our purpose is to ensure tamariki are in loving whānau and communities where oranga tamariki can thrive. Early involvement and showing love and care give children the best chance to grow into happy, thriving New Zealanders.

We offer a supportive team committed to wellbeing, along with significant training and professional development. As this is a casual role, we offer $26 per hour plus 8% holiday pay.

Me pēhea te tuku tono | How to Apply

Apply online with your CV and Cover Letter. Existing Oranga Tamariki employees should log in to apply.

Hurry, as applications close on 26th August 2025!

If interested, please review our code of conduct, which outlines expectations for our staff and requires being free from drugs and alcohol at work.
