About the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated solicitor to join our Corporate & Registries team. The Corporate & Registries team provides legal advice to all MBIE’s operations, including in relation to MBIE’s 17 different regulatory systems and on governance, integrity and conduct matters that touch the organisation.

In this role you will work with other in‑house counsel providing high quality and timely advice on a wide range of legal issues. As an experienced solicitor you will work with autonomy in a collaborative and supportive environment and learn from the experts to build your knowledge as well as sharing your knowledge with others to provide advice and support on some of MBIE’s more complex legal matters.

Over time, there is scope for our lawyers to work in relation to different regulatory systems, depending on their experience and interest. This also means that we can offer significant opportunities for developing experience across a broad variety of subject areas and building your career within MBIE.

This role offers an opportunity to provide legal advice on a broad range of matters. Your clients may be involved in enforcing residential tenancies law, advising in relation to our regulation of builders and electricians, reviewing decisions that impact on company directors, search powers and managing the companies register, understanding the intricacies of radio spectrum licensing and supporting our many and diverse business teams to respond to queries and concerns raised in carrying out our regulatory functions. MBIE collaborates with business groups in providing data and technology to enable delivery on the opportunities, challenges and priorities that lie ahead for Aotearoa New Zealand and that is where your experience in the areas of privacy, official information, information sharing and delegations is required.

Skills and Experience Required

• A tertiary qualification in law and a current practising certificate (or eligible to hold one)
• At least 3 years PQE, with public law expertise and an understanding of the mechanisms of government
• Experience or interest in advising on regulatory and operational legal matters
• Well‑developed written and verbal communication abilities, which allow you to convey key ideas and issues in a way that is suitable to the audience
• The ability to deliver successful outcomes in a demanding environment
• Strong relationship management skills and an ability to work well with others
• Sound legal technical skills
• Legal right to live and work in New Zealand
