Position

Production Technician / Machine Operator

Location : 240 Jellicoe St., Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

Required Hours : 40 hrs / week

Job Purpose

The Production Technician / Machine Operator is responsible for ensuring the efficient and high-quality manufacturing of pet food products. The role includes maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and operating state‑of‑the‑art machines across the Extrusion, Packing, Meats, Treats & RDF, and Raw Material Handling / Batching lines.

Responsibilities

Execute production processes to meet production targets and quality standards.
Monitor production output and adjust workflows to optimize efficiency.
Ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and safety regulations.
Conduct regular quality control checks to maintain product quality.
Coordinate with team members to minimize downtime.

Equipment Maintenance and Operation

Perform routine maintenance or Basic Equipment Care (BEC) and repairs on production equipment.

Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate with the maintenance team for resolution.

Operate machinery and equipment according to standard operating procedures.

Quality Control and Assurance

Implement and maintain quality control procedures to ensure product consistency.

Conduct inspections and tests on raw materials, in‑process products, and finished goods.

Document findings and initiate corrective actions as needed.

Health and Safety Compliance

Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and company policies.

Conduct safety inspections and audits to identify hazards and implement corrective measures.

Train team members on safe work practices and emergency procedures.

Encourage a safety‑first culture among all production staff.

Process Improvement

Identify opportunities for process optimization and efficiency improvements.

Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to implement process improvements and streamline workflows.

Professional Development

Facilitate ongoing learning and development opportunities for team members.

Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and regulatory requirements.

Encourage continuous improvement and innovation in production processes.

Ad Hoc

Perform other tasks assigned individually or as part of a team.

Realign efforts with changing business needs as directed.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in food science, engineering, or a related field preferred.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in food manufacturing as a Production Technician or Extrusion Technician.

Experience in pet food production is advantageous.

Strong experience with extrusion technology.

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate effectively with all team members.

Excellent organizational skills and ability to schedule multiple activities and resources efficiently.

Required Training & Certifications

Basic Manufacturing certification preferred.

Forklift license, First Aid certification, Food Safety certification (e.g., HACCP) preferred.
