  • About Awanui Labs Dunedin

    Awanui Labs Dunedin is part of the Awanui Group and the largest provider of Pathology services in New Zealand with laboratories throughout the country.

    Our laboratory provides all community and hospital pathology services for the Otago and Southland region; support the service needs for laboratories outside this region as well as a nationwide cytology service.

    The extensive patient base leads to a comprehensive range of diagnostic cases and teaching experience for Anatomical Pathology trainees.

    About the Awanui Labs Dunedin Anatomical Department

    The Anatomical Pathology department has six registrars and eleven Anatomical Pathologists with various sub-specialty interests; all of whom are enthusiastic educators.

    There is a structured Anatomical Pathology training program, run through the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA); with a designated pathologist trainee supervisor providing teaching and examination support.

    Our teaching philosophy is based on learning through well-supervised experience within a highly supportive environment.

    The department processes around fifty thousand histology, over two hundred thousand cervical cytology and fifteen thousand non-gynaecology cytology cases per annum.

    As a provider for both hospital and community pathology services, there is a good mix of high complexity specimens and a high volume of community cases.

    We run a daily FNA clinic and provide cytology training support for Awanui Wellington registrars.

    We operate out of spacious modern offices in a dedicated Anatomical Pathology building which is close by Dunedin Hospital and the University of Otago.

    You will have access to state-of-the-art, on-site diagnostic immunohistochemistry with highly competent histology technical staff and a comprehensive range of diagnostic molecular testing services.

    About the role

    Registrars will report to their trainee supervisor and the Clinical Lead of Anatomical Pathology.

    The successful candidate(s) will be trained in the following :

    • Laboratory Management
    • Laboratory techniques
    • Handling fresh and frozen specimens
    • Surgical Cut up
    • Fine Needle Aspiration techniques
    • Microscopic examination and reporting
    • Cytological examination and reporting
    • Presentation at Multidisciplinary meetings
    • Quality Assurance program modules
    • Undergraduate teaching
    • About you

      To ensure your success in this role you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge :

    • We are looking for candidates who are meticulous with attention to detail, one who can multitask and be a team player and work in a complex environment
    • MB ChB or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand in an appropriate registration category
    • Completed a minimum of two years in clinical posts following completion of MB ChB by the time of commencing the program, PGY3 and above
    • New Zealand or Australian citizen or permanent resident or residing in New Zealand with valid working visa
    • No prior experience is required but previous experience in Anatomical Pathology is desirable
    • Completed or eligible to sit the Basic Pathological Sciences (BPS) Examination
