The ranger team is a small and dedicated crew who work closely together to protect taonga species and restore this area of significant ecological, historical and environmental importance.

About us
The Bream Head / Te Whara Conservation Trust (BHCT) is a 20+ year old charitable trust working under a community agreement with the Department of Conservation (DOC) and in collaboration with tangata whenua, the local community, the Whangarei District Council (WDC), Northland Regional Council (NRC) and Predator Free Whangarei (PFW), to manage the ecological restoration of the Bream Head Scenic Reserve.
We also work in areas surrounding this reserve.

About the role
We are looking for a motivated conservationist with experience in predator control, species monitoring, pest plant control, track maintenance, reporting and project management.
Well-developed people skills are crucial for this role as stakeholder and community engagement is an essential part of working at BHCT.
With a small, dedicated ranger team, we work closely together every day – the right fit and attitude are just as important as practical skills.
Having current First Aid Certification, a Controlled Substances License and Growsafe qualifications would be advantageous.
Location :
Bream Head Scenic Reserve, Whangarei Heads.
Position : Fixed-term contract
Up to $40 per hour depending on skills and / or experience
Maximum of 35 hours per week
Key responsibilities :
Working collaboratively with BHCT's other contractors and subcontractors in the scheduled delivery of : Bait station servicing; Track clearing; Pest plant control; Nursery; Planting days; Species monitoring; Assistance with the Trust's education programme; Weekend on-call contact for the Trust's volunteers, on a roster basis (approx. one weekend per month); Relevant contribution to ranger reports, operational plan, annual reports and fundraising needs.
Management of predator control networks within the Bream Head Scenic Reserve and the Ocean Beach Recreational Reserve including track maintenance, track marking, station marking.
Management and control of PFW camera monitoring and leg holds and related indexing of images.
