Associate – Primary Electrical Engineer (HV Substation Design)

In this Associate role, you will play a key part in the technical and project delivery requirements across Beca’s Power business for the Primary Electrical Engineering practice area. You will join an international team of experienced electrical engineering specialists to design and deliver critical Power primary, substation, and infrastructure related projects across New Zealand and Australia. The complexity, variety, and type of projects will enable you to grow your career by learning from experienced peers, technical leaders, and some of the industry’s leading Power engineers.

You will provide technical leadership and input from your detailed design abilities, creating High Voltage (HV 220kV) and Extra High Voltage (EHV 500 kV) electrical conceptual and detailed designs for transmission and distribution clients using the latest in digital design technologies. You will solve problems and deliver solutions across a variety of client requirements and standards, preparing substation layouts, equipment specifications, HV / MV cable sizing calculations, earthing design, and applying safety standards, building on your power systems engineering capability.

You will coach, mentor, and develop the next generation of Primary Electrical Engineers, supporting their training and the verification processes of our engineering teams. You will help them undertake packages of works, supporting on-the-job and technical training to develop their careers. You will contribute to the Power team’s commitment to delivery excellence, quality assurance, and high-quality design. You will be accountable for financial and programme outcomes on projects and work packages you lead, as well as supporting client management, bidding, and the preparation of project proposals.

Our design and project roles are busy, with multiple work projects, differing client deadlines and changing timeframes. Your ability to work across multiple workstreams and manage your team’s time and deliverables will be important, as will your adaptability to changing project deliverables and timeframes. Updating stakeholders early and often will be a key principle. You will be part of a team of Beca’s leading design experts delivering best in class designs.

Ko wai koe | About you

Your primary and substation design skills are grounded in solid fundamentals, proven through experience leading Primary design on complex substation projects. You have experience delivering high voltage substation designs, ensuring quality and accuracy while guiding others. You understand key steps for producing substation layouts, equipment lists, clearance checks, and HV cable designs, and are familiar with New Zealand and Australian regulations. Proficiency in CYMCAP, CDEGs, Autodesk SBS, Inventor, Navisworks, AutoCAD, and / or MicroStation is advantageous.

As well as being focused on your own continued technical development, you will be passionate and motivated to help the next generation of senior and graduate engineers. You excel in building credible relationships across functions and disciplines, collaborating effectively with clients, contractors, and community groups. You are passionate about learning, engaging, and supporting others, with a positive attitude and a good sense of humour.

You will be a valued and experienced team member, able to understand technical considerations yet lead conversations to support specific project requirements.
