Based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara

So that the foundations of ancestral lands may be solid, benefitting Māori from our past, present and future alike. This is Te Tumu Paeroa, guardian, support and advancer of the mana of Māori land everywhere.

Our role is to provide professional trustee services for Māori. We do this by carrying out the terms of trusts and ensuring the whenua is protected and enhanced for future generations.

About the Role

In this role, the Kaiarahi Pūrongo Pūtea | Financial Reporting Manager will be responsible for overseeing the end-to-end statutory financial reporting obligations of the Māori Trustee, ensuring we meet our legislative requirements with accuracy, integrity, and timeliness.

This is a critical role that ensures the financial transparency and accountability of the Māori Trustee. It offers the opportunity to work closely with senior leaders, external auditors, and government stakeholders, while contributing to the financial stewardship of whenua-based assets.

Responsibilities will include :

Responsibilities

  • Statutory Reporting Leadership : Ensure the Māori Trustee’s annual report, audit, and external reporting obligations are completed to a high standard and within required timeframes.
  • Technical Financial Expertise : Provide expert advice on financial reporting standards (including IPSAS), internal policies, and accounting treatments for new investments or changes in legislation.
  • Audit Management : Lead the external audit process for the Māori Trustee, subsidiaries, and associates, identifying and mitigating audit risks, and ensuring compliance with statutory and internal requirements.
  • Group Financial Statements : Coordinate and complete financial statements for the Māori Trustee Group, including parent and subsidiary entities, and the statement of service performance.
  • External Engagements : Support external reporting requirements such as funding agreement reporting to the Minister, parliamentary questions, and Department of Statistics requests.

What we are looking for

  • Minimum 3 years financial accounting experience.
  • CA Qualified (CAANZ or similar) with financial reporting experience.
  • A good understanding of IPSAS and IFRS accounting standards and principles.
  • Proven Financial reporting skills including in-depth understanding of performance reporting and demonstrated ability in solving complex accounting issues and writing technical accounting memos.
  • Excellent skills and experience in budget preparation, forecasting and variance reporting, payroll oversight.
  • Excellent skills in building and fostering strong internal and external relationships and building confidence as a professional advisor.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills, including the proven ability to description.
  • An excellent understanding of process improvement and business decision support principles and practices.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand is essential.
