Job description

Overview

About Tend Health

Tend Health is a dynamic, fast-moving General Practice revolutionising healthcare delivery in New Zealand. We’re not your typical general practice – we’re forward-thinking and digital-first, with a nationwide footprint through our network of clinics and our innovative Online Now urgent care service. Through our innovative digital-first approach, patients can choose to be seen in person at our clinics, or digitally via the Tend app. We aim to provide the best tools to our clinicians, from Patient Management System integration to cutting-edge AI assistants.

The Role

We’re seeking a talented and versatile Senior or Intermediate Software Engineer to join our high-caliber product, design and engineering team. As part of our small but mighty team, you’ll play a crucial role in shaping the future of digital healthcare in New Zealand. You will be responsible for delivering business value by designing and developing software in a highly collaborative environment. As a team, we are tackling a hugely complex problem space. As we learn where we need to focus to achieve our goals, priorities can and will change regularly. You should be comfortable working in an environment where change is constant and be confident to help navigate the way forward. We encourage and expect you to use – or at least investigate – the current state-of-the-art tools, currently AI / ML, and also think about how to apply those tools and technologies to the Tend platform for use by our customers, both internal and external. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the experience of our patients and clinicians, as well as use and maintain a modern, leading edge software delivery platform. We pride ourselves in our agility from concept to production, and we ship multiple times a day (yes, including Fridays).

Our Engineering Philosophy

At Tend Health, we value :

  • Front to Back capabilities : While we all have specialities, our engineers are expected to work across the entire stack, from frontend to backend and infrastructure
  • Pragmatic shipping : We prioritize getting code to customers quickly to improve their healthcare experience, rather than pursuing perfection at the expense of delivery. We utilise techniques like feature flagging to ensure that we can do this safely and efficiently
  • Continuous learning : While we use specific technologies, we’re more interested in your ability to learn and adapt than in your exact match with our current stack
  • Collaboration : Our small team works closely together, sharing knowledge and supporting each other's growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain applications that power Tend Health’s innovative healthcare services
  • Work across the entire technology stack, from customer-facing interfaces to backend systems, databases and infrastructure
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams across the business to design, implement, and ship new features
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of application security (like OWASP) and NZ privacy principles, with a commitment to incorporating these considerations into all aspects of software development to safeguard sensitive healthcare data and ensure compliance with relevant regulations
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and help evolve our technology stack
  • Share knowledge across the engineering team
  • Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Preference for a range of skills across the whole stack, but not a requirement. A willingness to apply your skills in all layers is a must
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with non-technical stakeholders
  • Preferred Skills And Experience

  • Experience with React and React Native
  • Familiarity with GraphQL, specifically Apollo
  • Knowledge of AWS services, particularly Lambda, SQS, DynamoDB, and Kinesis
  • Some proficiency in TypeScript (or Javascript)
  • Experience with SQL, specifically PostgreSQL
  • Understanding of Serverless and Event Driven architectures
  • A willingness to explore new technologies including AI / ML, both using them for day to day work, and incorporating them into our products
  • Passion for healthcare technology and improving patient outcomes.
  • Our Tech Stack

  • Frontend : React, ReactNative, Apollo Client, Vite
  • API Layer : GraphQL, with some REST
  • Backend : AWS Lambda, Apollo Server
  • Language : TypeScript, with a little Swift / Kotlin / Terraform for good measure
  • Database : PostgreSQL, with some DynamoDB and others
  • Additional Technologies : AWS services (SQS, DynamoDB, Kinesis, Bedrock)
  • Core use of AI / LLM models inside the product (usually Claude 4, via Bedrock)
  • We have a hybrid mode of working, where we are in the office at least one day a week (if possible) so we can have our main team meetings. We encourage people to come into the office more if they prefer, to make the most use of our snacks, coffee machine and other food perks.

If you’re passionate about using technology to improve healthcare and thrive in a fast-paced, innovative environment, we want to hear from you.

Join us in our mission to make Aotearoa the healthiest people in the world!
