Job description

Good Wood Aotearoa are seeking a Park Ranger to join our team.

We are a privately owned company established in

  • as an environmental conservation services company working predominantly in the plant and animal pest control arena.

You will be part of a team who will be based at Shakespear and Te Arai Regional Parks, Waiheke Island and Bethells Beach working primarily on environmental weed control using herbicides.

There may be some predator control work in areas like Oneriri Peninsular, Shakespear and Tawharanui Regional Parks, and native revegetation spray preparation work in the winter on Waiheke.

The work will mainly involve strenuous bush / dune walking off-track carrying a 15 ltr knapsack of herbicide, so a high level of fitness is essential.

It can involve working alone doing animal pest control.

This work is not suitable for daily commuting from Auckland to Waiheke unless you have a vehicle on Waiheke to travel between the ferry and the remote work sites when the team is on the island.

Hence you will need secure accommodation on Waiheke for these periods.

Preferred applicants will :

Have a full and clean drivers licence

Have a high level of fitness

Have at least 2 years prior experience in a Park Ranger or similar role

A Level 4 (or higher) qualification in an environmental / conservation field, with a strong understanding of conservation principles is useful

Preferably have First Aid certification

Be able to work alone or in a team

Be able to work off track in the bush, relying on a GPS for navigation

Be able to carry a heavy backpack on uneven terrain for long periods

Have strong experience / knowledge working with herbicides and their application and be comfortable working with other pesticides

Be able to work away staying in basic shared accommodation e.g. huts, bachs and sheds

Be able to work flexible-length days

Be a team player, including contributing to cooking and cleaning when in shared accommodation

Sound experience in pest animal trapping would be useful

Have excellent botanical, native plant and weed identification skills

Have sound experience in native forest regeneration

Have strong experience in GIS and field data collection

Have good data recording, Excel / Word and report writing skills

The hourly rate will be $
