About the role
Hands-on, you will help maintain heritage sites and visitor infrastructure, including work on the iconic Ulva Island / Te Wharawhara, while guiding and inspiring field teams to achieve great results for nature and visitors alike.
Maintaining historic and visitor sites, front and backcountry tracks, huts and structures.
Leading volunteer and field teams, fostering a strong Health and Safety culture.
Coordinating office tasks such as data entry, planning, and organising field trips.
Maintaining the workshop, power tools, and small machinery.
Providing support to wider teams as needed.
The role will involve living and working in the backcountry up to a week at a time, often accessed by helicopter, boat or foot.
Living on Rakiura
Private accommodation is limited; staff accommodation is available in a shared house.
Pets are not permitted.
Skills and experience
Practical experience in maintenance, carpentry, building or plumbing.
High level of physical fitness and experience in the backcountry, especially in remote and rugged terrain.
Strong planning and organisational skills.
Tech-savvy skills and experience using apps and computer-based systems.
Ability to lead others and promote a safety-first culture.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Valid driver's licence.
Understanding of te ao Maori and the Treaty of Waitangi.
Desirable
Experience in hut and bridge maintenance.
Current First Aid certificate.
Skippers ticket / boating experience.

The salary range for this position is $65,070–$75,981, with the starting salary based on the successful applicant's relevant skills and experience.
