Ministry of Education New Zealand is seeking a Kaitakawaenga for the Learning Support team in the North Shore City and Waitakere City. The role is permanent and will support Māori students with learning support needs.

Salary : $69,966 – $118,450 per annum + 3% KiwiSaver. Salary reflects individual skills and experience.

About this role

  • Working proactively with Māori tamariki, mokopuna and their whānau, hāpu and iwi, educators and Learning Support colleagues to identify and eliminate barriers to access learning support services for Māori students with learning support needs.
  • Working with and alongside adults to develop appropriate communications, consultation and co‑operation to promote a well‑learning lifestyle for tamariki and rangatahi Māori requiring additional quality supports across all education settings.
  • Addressing key outcomes for whānau in key plan meetings with educators, Ministry specialist staff and agencies.
  • Integrating Te Ao Māori with subject matter experts to endorse and strengthen cultural solutions for the learner and whānau.
  • Working effectively as part of a trans‑disciplinary team.

About you

  • A relevant diploma qualification (minimum two years of study) or higher.
  • Preference for Early Childhood Teaching, Primary Teaching, Social Work or equivalent experience.
  • Good understanding of current Education priorities.
  • Te Reo Māori and tikanga; ability to build trusting relationships, communicate and bring lived experience.
  • High competence and fluency in Te Reo Māori and tikanga, ability to apply this expertise bi‑culturally.
  • Ability to work effectively in Māori settings including the auraki education system and Māori education from kohanga reo, kura kaupapa, wharekura and whare wananga.
  • A full driver’s licence.
  • Willingness to adhere to Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

    Learning Support is a critical part of the integrated Te Mahau team in the Ministry. We lead the educational sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential. Our specialists work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings and other agencies to maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.
