West Coast Forests Limited Partnership is a leading forestry enterprise committed to sustainable forest management across the West Coast of New Zealand. With stewardship over approximately 46,000 hectares spanning 20 forests, we play a vital role in preserving the natural heritage of the West Coast while contributing to the region’s economic development.

Established through a joint venture between Canadian investment funds and Ngāi Tahu Forestry, our partnership combines global expertise with deep local roots. We manage a 35-year forestry right, focusing on responsible harvesting, environmental stewardship, and long-term value creation.

We’re looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Technical Forester to join our team. This is a great opportunity to be part of a collaborative and forward-thinking organisation that values innovation, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement.

Position Overview

As a Technical Forester, you’ll play a key role in managing forest data, supporting operational planning, and ensuring environmental compliance. You’ll work across a range of technical areas including forest inventory, harvest planning, fibre flow monitoring, and FSC certification. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with data, systems, and field operations, and wants to contribute to the long-term success of our forest estate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage forest inventory programmes and data analysis
  • Support forest estate modelling and GIS data management
  • Monitor fibre flow, customer supply, and crew production
  • Update and maintain harvest plans and rate models
  • Assist with contractor costing and operational studies
  • Lead environmental compliance and FSC reporting
  • Coordinate resource consent data and environmental studies
  • Provide technical support across harvesting and mining activities

What We’re Looking For

  • At least 5 years’ experience in forestry
  • A formal qualification in Forestry Science or Forest Engineering
  • Strong analytical and GIS skills (training provided if needed)
  • Excellent communication and organisational abilities
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement
  • Experience with forest modelling tools (e.g., Tigermoth) is a plus
