Intermediate Mechanical (HVAC) Engineer - Christchurch

TM Consultants Limited | Mechanical Engineering | Full-time, Permanent

About Us

At TMCo, we’re a New Zealand–owned, multidisciplinary consultancy delivering structural, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, civil, fire, and sustainability services across Aotearoa and Australia. With ~80 staff and 10 offices, we partner with clients in every type of project including commercial, health, education, industrial, residential, seismic resilience, refurbishment, airports, etc...everything!

We’re practical, down-to-earth people who back each other to deliver quality design, smart solutions, and outstanding client outcomes.

The Opportunity

This isn’t just another building services role. As an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer (HVAC) with TMCo in Christchurch, you’ll shape smarter, greener, and cost-effective HVAC solutions that make a difference across all types of projects.

In our proven, multi-discipline firm (17 years strong), you’ll own HVAC design packages, coordinate solutions with other disciplines in the 3D space, and help lift delivery quality while learning from senior specialists. This role suits someone who is technically strong (or keen to grow), enjoys collaborating within a team, and communicates well with clients and other consultants. You’ll get end-to-end project exposure and the chance to step up.

What You’ll Do

  • Deliver mechanical / HVAC design from concept to construction : calculations, design intent, selections, schedules, specs, and client comms.
  • Work with the TMCo draughting team to produce coordinated Revit MEP models and clear, buildable documentation.
  • Review and communicate in 3D (Revit drafting skills a plus but not essential).
  • Collaborate closely with other services disciplines in-house and externally to resolve issues early and ensure coordinated delivery.
  • Engage with clients, architects, and contractors to communicate designs clearly.
  • Support in documenting sustainability aspects (Green Star, Homestar, NABERS, carbon counting, IES modelling – nice to have but not essential).
  • Assist with fees, bids, reverse briefs, and reporting as part of the project lifecycle.
  • Carry out site inspections and observation, respond to RFIs, and issue construction advice notes (CANs).

What You’ll Bring

  • 3+ years’ mechanical (HVAC) experience in NZ consultancy design and construction (this is an absolute must have).
  • Curious, quality-focused, and keen to grow.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, able to adapt to clients, contractors, and technical teams.
  • Solid understanding of NZBC, AS / NZS standards, and good engineering practice.
  • Bonus : skills in other disciplines, Revit, or sustainability.
  • Why TMCo?

  • Real project ownership, direct client exposure, and multi-disciplinary learning.
  • Mentoring, CPD support (including CPEng pathway), and room to advance.
  • Flexible working, supportive culture, and a team that backs good ideas.
  • Travel opportunities with a national company and our Australian subsidiary.
  • Exposure to sustainable design projects (Green Star, NABERS, Homestar, energy modelling).
  • Our Promise to You

At TMCo, you’re not just a number. You’ll be part of a nimble, ambitious firm where your ideas matter, your growth is supported, and your contribution helps build a more sustainable future.

    Ready to Step Up?

If you’re a talented, driven Mechanical Engineer ready for the next step in your career, we’d love to hear from you. Apply today and help us design smarter, greener, and more resilient buildings across New Zealand.
