Overview

Agency for Science, Technology and Research – Queenstown

The Metals and Ceramic Forming Group is looking for an innovative and motivated Senior Research Engineer with experience in powder‑bed inkjet and / or laser powder‑bed fusion additive manufacturing (AM) processes to join our team. The candidate will be attached to the Additive Innovation Centre (AIC), hosted in SIMTech and supported by the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC), to bridge the R&D activities within the Group with the industry solutions sought by companies engaged under AIC. This role offers opportunities to contribute to cutting‑edge AM research, industry collaborations and technology development, with a strong focus on accelerating the adoption of AM towards pilot batch production and industrial deployment. As such, cross‑sectorial industrial project experience will be highly advantageous. There will be continual opportunities to grow and learn, as well as expand and improve the current set of skills through involvement, together with the team, in industry and competitively funded projects related to various AM technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver projects involving the development of AM process recipes for powder‑bed inkjet, laser powder‑bed fusion, and related industrial applications.
  • Operate additive manufacturing powder‑bed printing systems and related post‑processing equipment for end‑to‑end additive manufacturing solutions.
  • Perform metallic material testing, sample preparation, microstructural characterization and defect analysis for the fabricated parts.
  • Prepare technical reports and deliver project progress updates.
  • Lead and manage project resources, lab operations, procurement, safety compliance and 5S housekeeping standards.
  • Support outreach and knowledge sharing through seminars, training and industry events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, Materials Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in additive manufacturing.
  • Experience with process parameters development and metallic material characterization.
  • Proficiency in engineering CAD / CAM software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD is preferred.
  • Programming skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB, C++) are advantageous.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem‑solving, and hands‑on technical abilities.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with team members and industry partners.
  • Independent, resourceful and adaptable to a dynamic work environment.
