Job description

Are you a clinical, pharmaceutical, or informatics expert driven by precision, patient safety, and the future of digital health?

The New Zealand Medicines Formulary (NZF) and the New Zealand Universal List of Medicines (NZULM) are central to safe, consistent, and interoperable prescribing across Aotearoa. Together, they provide clinicians with trusted, clinically verified medicines information and the national medicines terminology that enables electronic prescribing, dispensing, and medicines management.

We’re looking for a Lead Terminologist to guide the strategic development, stewardship, and clinical integrity of New Zealand’s medicines terminology. This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of clinical practice, digital systems, and data standards—and who wants their expertise to directly support safer, smarter healthcare.

This is a 0.6 FTE role based in Dunedin, our Head Office, or remote from anywhere in New Zealand.

As the Lead Terminologist, you will :

  • Oversee the structure, accuracy, and clinical safety of the NZULM dataset
  • Maintain and enhance governance frameworks, quality assurance processes, and terminology standards
  • Ensure alignment with international terminologies such as SNOMED CT and ATC
  • Lead the evaluation and integration of new medicines, formulations, devices, and classifications
  • Provide expert advice to regulatory, clinical, and technical stakeholders across the health system
  • Collaborate with Medsafe, Pharmac / Te Pātaka Whaioranga, Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, vendors, clinical groups, and digital system implementers
  • Communicate changes, release notes, and guidance to users and system partners
  • Lead, mentor, and support clinical editors, analysts, and subject matter experts
  • Contribute to long‑term strategic planning for NZULM and NZF services
  • Participate in testing and integration activities for digital clinical systems

You will bring :

  • A clinical or pharmaceutical qualification (e.g., Pharmacist, Clinical Informatician, Medicines Safety Specialist) and a current APC
  • 5+ years’ experience in medicines data, healthcare terminology, clinical informatics, or a related field
  • Strong understanding of pharmaceutical forms, doses, nomenclature, and clinical workflows
  • Hands‑on experience with national or international terminologies (e.g., SNOMED CT, ATC, UCUM)
  • Excellent analytical ability, attention to detail, and data quality focus
  • Confidence explaining complex concepts to both clinicians and technical teams
  • Proven experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders across the health, digital, and regulatory sectors
  • Desirable skills include :

  • Postgraduate training in informatics or data standards
  • Experience in ePrescribing or pharmacy systems
  • Leadership experience within multidisciplinary teams
  • Personal attributes :

  • Collaborative
  • Detail-focused
  • Adaptable
  • System‑level thinker
  • Committed to equity and patient safety
  • The New Zealand Medicines Formulary (NZMF) is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion — and we value having a team that reflects the communities we serve. We honour our obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and seek candidates who share our commitment to partnership, participation, and protection.

We welcome applications from Māori, Pacific, disabled, and rainbow communities.

We offer a supportive, collaborative environment where your expertise directly influences clinical safety and healthcare outcomes across Aotearoa.

Remuneration is competitive and based on experience and qualifications.

If you’re motivated by precision, passionate about medicines safety, and excited to shape the future of clinical interoperability in New Zealand, we’d love to hear from you.
