Specialist Rheumatology Nurse

The post holder will develop and work at an enhanced level of practice, utilising postgraduate experience, knowledge and skills in the Rheumatology specialty.

They will manage discrete aspects of patients' care in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team, within their scope of practice, aligned to the four pillars of practice and to Trust policy for 'Enhanced, Advanced and Consultant Level Practice'.

This contributes to improved quality of care for patients.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Practice

Provide advice and support to nurses and multi-disciplinary colleagues within the Rheumatology specialty.

Deliver patient-centred care including assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of appropriate clinical interventions within a specialised and generic caseload.

Utilise appropriate models of care delivery, innovation and clinical effectiveness tools, ensuring data collection of clinical activity to support analysis of clinical and patient outcome measures.

Support complex patient pathways and liaise with multi-disciplinary colleagues and external agencies to ensure a patient-focused approach for the Rheumatology pathway, ensuring equitable care delivery.

Job responsibilities

Leadership

Provide credible role modelling and compassionate leadership to nurses at all times.

Work collaboratively to support delivery of nursing ambitions.

Actively involve others in communications between patients, their families and multi-disciplinary colleagues, supporting excellent communication at all times.

Work collaboratively with patient forums and multi-disciplinary colleagues to support practice and service development, meeting the needs of the local population.

Be actively involved in monitoring standards of care and act on feedback from patients, their families and carers.

Work collaboratively within the nursing team and other multi-disciplinary colleagues within the Rheumatology service to deliver pre- and post-registration education and training.

Support an environment for all students and learners focused on enquiry and positive opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and competence at all levels of development.

Teach and advise patients and their families / carers how to manage their condition and support the MDT in patient-focused education.

Provide advice within Rheumatology nursing / practice.

Participate in the A Equip supervision model aligned to Trust supervision policies, utilising restorative practice as a tool for reflective learning and mentoring.

Maintain personal and professional development, continually developing clinical skills to provide high-quality care aligned to Trust policies, NMC guidelines and revalidation requirements.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Current NMC registration (at least 3 years)

Health-related degree relevant to professional registration and area of clinical practice or holds L6 post-registration modules with plan to complete degree programme

Evidence of continuing professional development and / or recognised course / qualification within the Rheumatology specialty

Formal teaching or preceptorship, mentoring qualification including ENB

Member of relevant royal college, professional society

Clinical Skills and Experience

Significant postgraduate healthcare experience across a range of clinical specialties

Demonstrable knowledge and experience of delivering high-quality clinical care using enhanced skills within the Rheumatology specialty aligned to the four pillars of practice

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Excellent time-management and organisational skills

IT skills relevant to digital healthcare and role

Teaching and facilitation skills

Experience of nurse-led services

Telephone assessment and consultation skills

Competence in IV infusion administration

Governance

Awareness of professional issues and current healthcare relating to quality governance, NICE and CQC, GIRFT

Awareness of quality governance, clinical effectiveness patient safety and patient experience tools to support clinical practice and service improvement

Clinical audit skills and experience relevant to role

Personal & Professional Attributes

Ability to work within a team to achieve goals and motivate others

Ability to work independently, under pressure to problem-solve, plan and prioritise care

Demonstrates knowledge of change management and impact
