Our goal is to make life better for small businesses and build a stronger economy that can change the world.The Data Reliability Engineering team at Xero manages our scalable and reliable database platform, supporting engineering teams to innovate and deliver value.

We are migrating from our self-managed cloud database to cloud managed database offerings.

We aim to build PostgreSQL expertise within the team, modernise our critical workloads safely and at scale, and drive innovation through tooling and best practices.How You'll Make an Impact : Collaborate across teams to deliver high-quality software efficiently.Contribute to the long-term technical strategy for Data Reliability and the Application Data Platform.Lead experiments and initiatives to modernise workloads to PostgreSQL safely and at scale.Assist senior engineers with coding, reviews, and data quality initiatives to ensure backend system reliability.Align technical decisions with product vision and strategy, influencing architectural direction.Facilitate cross-functional collaboration, resolve disagreements, and leverage opportunities across the organisation.Build and manage scalable software solutions, simplifying complex technical issues.Use data-driven approaches to deliver early value and solve customer problems effectively.What You'll Do : Create software : Guide engineering practices, adopt new technologies, define SLOs, and ensure security compliance.Deliver Golden Pathway tooling : Lead the strategy to simplify and enable innovation on the database platform.Test software : Promote quality standards and build robust, secure solutions.Resolve issues : Implement practices to prevent issues and participate in on-call responsibilities.Establish standards & frameworks : Develop and promote engineering standards, advocating for DevOps and reducing technical debt.Continuous improvement : Maintain and share knowledge of relevant technologies.Deliver infrastructure : Guide scalable, automated, and reliable infrastructure delivery.Promote modern practices : Lead agile and delivery practices, improving team processes.Participate in recruitment : Engage in hiring, external speaking, and promote Xero's brand.How You'll Do It : Live Xero's values : Embed values in decision-making and leadership.Document and report : Clearly document processes, architectures, and incidents.Communicate effectively : Articulate complex ideas and align stakeholders.Build relationships : Establish trust with stakeholders and support team collaboration.Enhance capability : Improve team performance through clarity, feedback, and inclusive environments.Adopt a growth mindset : Continuously learn and develop, coaching others as needed.Drive innovation and delivery : Lead teams to solve customer problems with technology.Mentor and coach : Promote a culture of learning and excellence.Collaborate effectively : Influence outcomes and establish best practices.Self-learning : Stay updated on relevant technological advances.What You'll Bring With You : Experience leading large, complex projects ensuring technical excellence.Strong background in cloud-native platforms focusing on scalability, reliability, and performance.Excellent communication skills for engaging at all levels.Proven mentorship and coaching abilities.Experience shaping technical vision and advocating best practices.Skills in quantifying and addressing technical debt.Ability to design automated processes for secure, correct delivery.Proactive approach to continuous improvement through metrics review.Strong problem-solving skills and ability to simplify technical challenges.Commitment to fostering inclusive, safe, and innovative environments.Salary Range : $266,000 - $315,000 a yearWhy Xero?
