We’re looking for an experienced Senior Solicitor to join MBIE’s Legal, Ethics & Privacy branch, within Strategy and Assurance. This is a unique opportunity to work across a wide range of civil and criminal matters that directly impact New Zealand’s labour and business markets.

As a Senior Solicitor in our Wellington-based litigation team, you’ll appear before Courts, Tribunals, Authorities, and licensing boards, advising on proceedings that span :

  • Employment standards enforcement in the Employment Court and ERA
  • Immigration and asylum claims in the Immigration and Protection Tribunal
  • Criminal prosecutions and civil appeals in the District Court
  • Tenancy disputes and occupational licensing board hearings
  • This is a varied and challenging role that offers exposure to high-impact legal work and the chance to contribute to MBIE’s mission to Grow New Zealand for All.

  • A tertiary qualification in law and a current practising certificate
  • At least 7–8 years’ PQE, with litigation experience
  • Strong technical legal skills and sound judgement
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage stakeholder relationships
  • A collaborative, proactive approach and team player mindset
  • Experience in immigration, criminal, or employment law (preferred but not essential)
  • Willingness to travel as required
  • Legal right to live and work in New Zealand
