We’re looking for an experienced Software Asset Management (SAM) professional ready to step into a role with broad scope, responsibility, and visibility. As our Software Asset Management Analyst, you will manage and optimise the lifecycle of software assets across Auckland Council—ensuring compliance, reducing risk, and driving cost efficiency. Your work will directly influence audit readiness, vendor negotiations, and strategic decision-making, helping Auckland Council maximise value from its software investments. This role is ideal for someone who has moved beyond entry-level SAM tasks and is ready to operate with autonomy, analytical depth, and cross-functional influence—without needing to be senior or fully specialised yet.
Ngā kawenga matua : Key Responsibilities
You will :
- Manage end-to-end software asset lifecycles—from request to retirement.
- Operate and maintain the SAM platform, ensuring data accuracy and completeness.
- Ensure software compliance across licensing, regulatory requirements, and internal standards.
- Support vendor and contract management activities, including renewals and negotiations.
- Provide data-driven insights on usage, optimisation opportunities, and cost trends.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning for software spend.
- Prepare and maintain audit-ready documentation and participate in audit activities.
- Develop, maintain, and improve SAM processes, policies, and governance frameworks.
- Act as a trusted advisor to IT, Finance, Procurement, and Legal—translating complex licensing data into actionable insights.
- Drive continuous improvement and contribute to SAM maturity uplift initiatives.
- Fulfil and facilitate requests for software and manage license pools.
Technical & Professional Skills
Proven experience in Software Asset Management or IT Asset Management (SAM / ITAM).Strong understanding of software licensing models and compliance management, including major vendors such as Microsoft, Adobe, Salesforce, SAP, ServiceNow, Autodesk, and others.Experience using SAM tools (e.g., Flexera, Snow, ServiceNow SAM Pro), ITSM platforms, procurement systems, and Active Directory.Strong analytical skills, especially with Excel and data interpretation.Commercial awareness and confidence working with contracts, renewals, and vendor engagement.Experience in audit preparation and risk identification.Soft Skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders.Proactive, organised, and able to manage multiple priorities.Comfortable operating in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.Demonstrates integrity, accountability, and a continuous improvement mindset.Qualifications
Tertiary qualification in Information Technology or related field preferred.2–3+ years of relevant SAM / ITAM experience (or equivalent capability).Certifications such as CSAM, CITAM, LISA, or equivalent are highly desirable.
