Stats NZ, a central government agency based in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand, is seeking a permanent staff member for its Methods & Design unit in the Research & Development Hub.
About the role
This position involves developing and improving methods to derive census-like information from administrative data, providing technical leadership within a workstream, and adapting research focus to support the organisation and New Zealanders.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and enhance statistical methods for census and related areas such as families, households, dwellings, and individuals.
- Lead technical aspects of workstreams and mentor colleagues.
- Communicate complex methodologies to stakeholders, supporting informed decision‑making.
- Apply knowledge of Te Tiriti, Tikanga, Te Reo, and Te Ao Māori to statistical work.
- Write and publish research papers, and manage project timelines.
- Analyse large administrative datasets using R, Python, SAS or SQL.
Qualifications & experience
Strong analytical expertise and experience leading the development of statistical methods.Proven track record of communication, influencing and relationship building in ambiguous environments.Experience in a similar role delivering statistical or technical projects, with familiarity in paper publication processes.Knowledge or willingness to learn about Te Tiriti, Tikanga, Te Reo and Te Ao Māori.Experience with New Zealand Integrated Data Infrastructure is an advantage.Efficient coding skills using R, Python, SAS or SQL.What you bring
