This is a full‑time role (40 hours per week), and we are open to permanent or secondment opportunities. It is a pivotal chance to lead building control across both the Ōtorohanga and Waitomo districts, making a real difference while enjoying the lifestyle you deserve.

About the Role | Ngā mahi

Leadership is at the heart of this high‑impact role. You will lead with values, apply deep industry expertise, and navigate a complex and evolving regulatory environment. The work is diverse, ranging from stage 2 construction of New Zealand’s first mega‑prison to rural sheds. You will use sharp judgment and technical credibility, foster collaboration, and inspire a shared passion for making a meaningful difference, supported by business support staff.

This role demands more than technical expertise. It calls for a leader with integrity, emotional intelligence, and the ability to build strong team culture. You will have the freedom to shape this new role and make it all it can be.

You will bring credibility through your qualifications and regulatory knowledge, but it is your ability to lead and develop two teams with empathy, adapt under pressure, and cultivate respectful, high‑performing environments that will truly define your impact.

The Nitty Gritty | Ngā Taipitopito

We offer a competitive salary range of $113,358 to $133,362 per annum based on your skills and experience, with a work vehicle available for commuting use. Plus, you will receive continual professional development and training to be ready to respond to civil emergencies if required.

While employed by Ōtorohanga District Council, we share common values with our Waitomo District Council neighbours. This role is just one shared service initiative between the two councils. Our combined districts are a true hidden gem in the beating heart of the King Country (Te Rohe Potae), from the breathtaking West Coast communities between Aotea and Mokau to the serene inland rural landscapes of Lake Arapuni and Western Pureora Forest.
