The work helps to continuously improve our systems and to give New Zealand Food Safety, MPI and overseas competent authorities ongoing confidence. It also supports the issuance of official assurances and attestations for market access, underpinning New Zealand's $50 billion of food and primary industries export trade. As a Specialist Systems Auditor you will work on diverse and challenging audits, individually and with a team for larger audits, travelling across the country and providing technical expertise to domestic and international stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will visit businesses across New Zealand to confirm compliance with New Zealand and relevant overseas country requirements.
  • You will facilitate and host audits by overseas authorities, usually in person in New Zealand but sometimes leading live‑stream audits from overseas.
  • You will provide technical expertise to accreditation bodies (IANZ and JASANZ) to ensure accredited parties meet MPI requirements.
  • You will perform special audits to follow up on serious non‑conformances as required.
  • You will contribute to the development, maintenance and implementation of the team's quality management and health and safety systems.

About You – Mōu

Our ideal candidate has impeccable integrity, an excellent communicator, significant auditing or verification experience and an in‑depth understanding of a sector's requirements. You must be confident representing MPI and New Zealand with overseas auditors and relate to domestic operators and stakeholders.

You must hold a current and full New Zealand driver licence (not temporary, learner or provisional) or an equivalent full foreign licence with any required endorsements.

Ideal candidate qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification in a discipline relevant to the primary sector (e.g. Veterinary Science recognised by the Veterinary Council of New Zealand, Food Safety, Food Technology, Science).

  • Knowledge of international trade arrangements and MPI’s role as a Competent Authority.
  • In‑depth knowledge of the Animal Products Act 1999 and its subsidiary legislation.
  • Aware of other regulatory frameworks (e.g. Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act, Animal Welfare Act, Food Act, Wine Act, Biosecurity Act) and administrative regimes (Organics, Plants, Treatments or Seed Varietal).
