Overview

Ranger Marine Protection role at Department of Conservation (DOC).

Join us to protect and revitalise New Zealand's marine environments, including the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.

This is a permanent, full-time position with rosters that operate from Wednesday to Sunday year-round.

Location : Fleet Street / Devonport, Auckland.

Salary ranges from $68,878 to $87,265 depending on skills and experience.

Responsibilities

Skipper vessels up to 20 m across the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park.

Mentor and train new team members and meet KPIs in this respect.

Ensure vessels meet regulatory and safety standards, maintain up-to-date documentation, coordinate inspections, and keep detailed records for audits.

Ensure compliance with marine protection laws through patrols, inspections, and engagement.

Collaborate with treaty partners, local communities, and marine users to promote sustainable practices.

Respond to environmental incidents, support emergency operations, and assist in compliance investigations.

Maintain accurate records, prepare high-quality reports, and issue infringements or documentation for prosecution.

Assist divers with scientific surveys and ecological assessments.

These roles require travel and may require working away from home for several days.

Rosters operate from Wednesday to Sunday year-round, with potential flexibility between June and September.

Skills, experience and qualifications

Minimum requirement : Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL) license; SRL endorsed to 24 metres under Maritime Rule 32.61.

Commercial vessel experience skippering vessels up to 20 m on open ocean in a commercial capacity.

Experience ensuring vessels meet regulatory and safety standards, maintaining up-to-date documentation, coordinating inspections, and keeping detailed records for audits.

Advocacy and compliance experience or ability to obtain warranted officer status.

Training and mentorship experience, especially in integrating new skippers into a team.

Physical fitness and medically fit to perform vessel handling duties (current WorkSafe medical certifications for maritime operations).

Navigation, GPS, chart reading, and marine safety protocols (including emergency and man-overboard procedures).

Basic marine engine troubleshooting and repairs; understanding of NZ maritime laws and compliance.

Experience maintaining operational logs and compliance documentation; vessel handling skills in varying conditions.

Knowledge of marine ecosystems and sustainable boating practices; ability to assess and manage marine hazards and risks.

Current Full NZ Driver License.

Desirable : Proficiency in Mandarin or Cantonese and Te Reo; law enforcement or compliance experience; tertiary qualification in marine / environmental science or related field; experience working with scientific divers or diving experience.

Commitment to marine sustainability and Te Papa Atawhai's Kaupapa, with understanding of Maori Tikanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
