About the role
The role of Head of Community Participation sits at the heart of community rugby in Southland, leading the work that connects clubs, schools, and communities across the region. It’s a chance to make a lasting difference to the game at the grassroots level and to support a strong, inclusive rugby culture for everyone.
- Lead and support the Community Rugby Team to deliver high-quality programmes and participation outcomes across Southland.
- Develop and implement strategies that grow engagement and inclusivity in community rugby.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clubs, schools, and community partners.
- Oversee the planning and delivery of competitions, events, and development programmes.
- Collaborate with internal teams and NZ Rugby to align initiatives and share best practice.
- Use data and insights to evaluate success and drive continuous improvement.
- Manage community rugby budgets and resources effectively.
- Ensure all community rugby activities are delivered safely and in line with organisational standards.
Responsibilities

Strong leadership and people management skills, with experience guiding teams and delivering results in a dynamic environment.Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with clubs, schools, community organisations, and key stakeholders.Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills, with a practical, hands-on approach.Experience in community engagement, sport development, or programme management — ideally within rugby or a similar sporting context.A genuine passion for community sport, inclusivity, and growing participation at all levels.Adaptability and a willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, when required.Relevant tertiary qualification in sport or business management, recreation, or a related field is preferred.Rugby coaching experience or a coaching qualification is preferred.About Us
