Overview

Since 2017 Rhyme and Reason have crafted approachable, award-winning beers out of our humble small brewery and taproom located in possibly one of the world’s most beautiful towns.

Our team already consists of a Head brewer and Lead brewer; this role will primarily focus on cellaring, packaging, logistics, cleaning, deliveries, etc. There will be some opportunities to get involved in brewing when needed.

You will work in RTD production, packaging, cellaring, cleaning, operate packaging machines, keg washer, kegging, operate forklift and electric forklift, deliveries, bar shifts at beer events, stocking cool rooms, wholesale dispatch, and general cleaning. Hot and cold side beer production when required. You will need the ability to drive a manual car.

More specifically :

  • Carry out safe use, cleaning, calibrating and storage of brewery instruments including the density meter, pH readers, Zahm Nagel and DO meter.
  • Preparing and loading grain.
  • Monitoring and looking after beers during all parts of the process including hot and cold side, packaging and warehousing, dispatch, deliveries.
  • Have a sound understanding of both hot and cold side of production, cellaring, CIP’s and packaging (Keg filling, canning and labelling).
  • Prepare and operate the 3-Head keg washer machine.
  • Prepare and operate the labelling machine.
  • Prepare and operate the canning machine.
  • Manage the transfer of beer from tank to tank, and from tank to package without compromising product quality.
  • Keep detailed records. Filling in brew sheets, monitoring tank fermentation log, dissolved oxygen log, packaging sheets, inwards and outwards goods and check-out sheets.
  • Clean kegs, tanks, hoses, fittings, brew house, bar lines, magic boxes, warehouse, brewery and anything else tasked.
  • Loading grain for brews and unloading spent grain.
  • Carbonating beer.

Rhyme and Reason prides itself on being one of the cleanest breweries in New Zealand. A high level of cleanliness is required in all areas.

The job will be diverse, and whilst you will be working with a team, you will also be completing duties by yourself often. You will need to be self-motivated, constantly finding jobs that need to be done, and executing them efficiently. This job will be busy, there is always something to do.

Weekend work will be necessary. We share these duties with the team, normally weekend work will only be for short periods, because beer never sleeps.

    To be successful in this role, you will ideally need

  • An IBD brewing qualification or equivalent, or a willingness towards gaining the qualification
  • A minimum of 2 years brewery production experience (cellaring, logistics, packaging, CIPs, safe transfer of beer, dry hopping, carbonating, operating packaging and keg washing machines, etc.)
  • Ability to perform and record measurements using brewery instruments / equipment
  • Be motivated and a team player with high standards and a GREAT attention to detail
  • Be able to follow existing procedures happily (your ideas are important to us, and we will consider potential changes, but our processes are in place for a reason)
  • Great mechanical aptitude and the ability to work under pressure
  • Be physically fit and be able to carry 25KG of materials
  • A current forklift licence and the ability to drive a manual car
  • A passion for high-quality beer
  • Brewer (manufacturing, packaging, cellaring, transport and logistics).

    Full time (32+ hours spread over Mon to Fri with the shared weekend work).
