Committee Advisory Member - Pacific Advisory Group

Applications for the Oranga Tamariki Pacific Advisory Group are now open until Wednesday 15 October 2025.

We are searching for seven outstanding individuals to join the Pacific Advisory Group to advise, influence, and advocate for Pacific tamaiti, talavou and kainga in the care system.

This is a unique opportunity to shape the delivery of Oranga Tamariki's strategic direction and ensure that the voices of our Pacific communities are at the centre of decision-making across the care and protection and youth justice systems.

About the Pacific Advisory Group

The purpose of the Pacific Advisory Group is to support Oranga Tamariki to achieve our strategic direction, and ensure that we

  • grow our understanding of the needs and experiences of tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau involved with Oranga Tamariki
  • improve our practice for and services to Pacific tamariki, rangatahi and whānau
  • monitor progress on the effectiveness of policies, practices, services and strategies for Pacific tamariki, rangatahi and whānau
  • shift towards increased Pacific community-led support and services for Pacific tamariki, rangatahi and whānau.

The Pacific Advisory Group provides a strong platform for Pacific perspectives to guide the design and delivery of Oranga Tamariki policies, practices, and services. Pacific Advisory Group members are appointed for a term of up to two years, with the possible opportunity for reappointment.

  • What you will bring

    Key requirements of Pacific Advisory Group members include :

  • Experience as a former or current caregiver, whānau member, advocate, provider, or community leader with lived experience or sector knowledge of Oranga Tamariki systems.
  • Specialist expertise, strong Pacific leadership, extensive networks, and regional reach to strengthen Oranga Tamariki's engagement with Pacific communities across Aotearoa.
  • Representation of diverse Pacific Aotearoa communities; the Rainbow community (including MVPFAFF+ identities), disability, youth (15-24 years), and young adult (24-34 years) perspectives.
  • Deep understanding and knowledge of ethnic specific Pacific cultures, values, and practices.
  • Ability to quickly foresee potential short-, medium-, and long-term outcomes and impacts for Pacific when considering proposals that come before the group.
  • Membership

    The Pacific Advisory Group is scheduled to meet six times a year through a combination of online and in-person meetings arranged by Oranga Tamariki.

    Expectations of members

  • Commit sufficient time to prepare for and attend panel meetings and any out-of-cycle engagements.
  • Respond in a timely manner to matters requiring advisory group input or engagement.
  • Provide constructive advice on presented policies and projects.
  • Be in tune with trending topics and issues impacting Pacific young people in care, whānau and communities to shape policies, practices, services, and processes.
  • Manage regular communications relating to the advisory group in a timely way.
  • Maintain the confidentially of all information relating to the advisory group, unless otherwise authorised. Members will sign and abide to a confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement.
  • Abide by all relevant Oranga Tamariki policies and procedures as they related to external quality assurance groups
  • Opportunities for members include

  • Direct influence on Oranga Tamariki policies, practices, and services in response to needs of Pacific tamaiti, talavou and kainga involved with the care system.
  • Increased networks through establishing connections with leaders, staff, and wider professionals across our organisation.
  • Pacific Advisory Group members are remunerated via sitting fees, as per the Cabinet Fees Framework. Note that this includes preparation time for meetings and bespoke engagements.
