This is a role within Commodity Risk & Trading (CR&T) at Fonterra, an embedded engineering function in Global Markets - Ingredients & Trading that builds resilient, scalable software to support trading, risk management, and P&L outcomes.

Our mission is to build software systems that unlock $100-150 million in annual value for the co-op. We work with traders, quants, and risk managers to shape the future of dairy trading, including real-time internal swap markets, algorithmic trading engines, and risk analytics platforms.

This is not a role for keeping the lights on – it’s a chance to architect and lead the engineering of systems that directly influence trading decisions, risk management, and P&L outcomes.

On-Site Facilities Supporting Inclusion : we offer on-site parental and prayer room facilities in Auckland and Hamilton offices as part of our inclusive environment.

You’ll be responsible for technical vision, hands-on development, and mentoring a team of engineers.

Responsibilities

• Work side-by-side with domain experts—traders, quants, and risk managers—to solve real problems in real time
• Build cloud-native, high-integrity systems using Python, Node.js, TypeScript, GraphQL, and Azure
• Tackle real-time data challenges, complex financial logic, and UX that enables trader flow
• Design for auditability, scalability, and security from day one
• Shape the future of commodity risk and trading through software that matters
