What do our Graduate Water Resources Scientists / Engineers do?

As a Graduate Water Resources Scientist or Engineer , you will be working on a broad range of local and international projects aimed at safeguarding our communities from flood hazard and protecting our environment. Whether it’s managing flood risk, conducting hydrological assessments to support hydro power projects, or managing the water quality of stormwater discharges, we’ve done it before.

You will work in the detail of our projects so that you can develop your science or engineering skills solving real world problems that are impacting our communities.

We expect that you would primarily be based in Stantec’s Petone office to work alongside our senior Water Resources Scientists and Engineers, with the opportunity to relocate part or full-time to the Wellington office once you gain more experience.

Some projects that our graduates have recently been involved in

  • Analysis of a flood warning network to identify at‑risk communities without in‑catchment monitoring.
  • Hydrological analysis (modelling) of multiple catchments in Fiji to understand water availability for a potential new hydro power scheme.
  • Monitoring of stormwater network discharges for potential impacts on the receiving environment.
  • Hydrological analysis to inform the design of a new bridge following damage during Cyclone Gabrielle.
  • We enjoy a wide variety of work in our team, some day‑to‑day tasks may include

  • Hydrological analysis and / or modelling to support flood hazard projects, transport projects, river engineering, dam projects or hydro power projects.
  • Assessment of flood risk, and management or mitigation options.
  • Providing input to integrated catchment management planning.
  • Assessing stormwater catchments and peak flows for different design storm events.
  • Water quality sampling, data analysis and interpretation and reporting.
  • Using GIS software to undertake analysis and prepare outputs.
  • Attending workshops, training, and career development opportunities.
  • Writing assessments, reports, memos, and other project management documentation.
  • Supporting the production of proposals or other appropriate business development tasks.
  • What you will bring
