Principal Planner - Auckland

This is an opportunity for a Principal Planner to join our high‑performing team based in Auckland, which includes all stages of the career path from entry talent through to Technical Directors. With a strong pipeline across a variety of clients, sectors, and with aspirations to grow, we seek someone with the skills in their repertoire to deliver exceptional results for our clients via a proven record of technical and commercial excellence.

Our planning team provides advice on complex development proposals throughout all stages of the planning process : from policy through to post‑consent monitoring. A large proportion of our projects respond to critical infrastructure issues, enabling positive future outcomes for our communities. This includes projects that will shape the future of Auckland, the wider region, and the country, providing opportunities for career progression. Our overarching goal is to achieve excellent results for our clients and positive outcomes for our communities.

Our project work is varied and includes :

  • Implementing the Fast Track Approvals Act (FTAA) – our projects are at the leading edge of this new legislative process
  • Maintaining a safe and efficient transport network – we are collaborating with NZTA on Roads of National and Regional Significance as well as upgrading the local road network
  • Improving water quality – working with Watercare to provide new infrastructure and supporting Auckland Council’s improvements to the Blue Green Network
  • Creating a secure, green energy future – supporting a variety of renewable energy developers and the national grid operator on projects that generate the energy and connect it to the grid and communities

Skills and Experience required

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in planning
  • Professional membership of your relevant industry body
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of the planning process including planning applications, policy frameworks, designations, the hearing and appeal process, FTAA process, and Assessment of Environmental Effects (AEE)
  • Well versed in using critical thinking to prepare planning policy, planning assessments, strategies, investment cases, and project due diligence.
  • Strong organisational skills to optimise and prioritise competing demands
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences
  • A team player, authentic, trustworthy, empathetic and relationship‑driven
