Caroline Freeman College is a residential college owned and operated by the University of Otago; a friendly, supportive collegiate community where everyone is encouraged to engage, grow, and find their place.
Caroline Freeman College is home to 300 mostly first‑year undergraduate students and provides a caring collegiate experience with a strong emphasis on fostering community, wellbeing and achievement. The Tautiaki‑Kaiāwhina (Assistant Warden) plays a central role in sharing the Caroline Freeman spirit of manaakitanga to everyone. At the heart of our approach is a commitment to nurturing a strong sense of whanaungatanga, the essential foundation for the learning belonging and personal growth of our tauira.

Tautiaki‑Kaiāwhina are key members of the College pastoral and welfare team. With a focus on wellbeing / oraka, they provide culturally appropriate opportunities for residents to experience cultural, sporting, academic and personal development in a positive college environment.

The position is live‑in and requires a high level of commitment, including being rostered on‑call. Accommodation is provided within the College and the total remuneration package for this position includes full compensation for all accommodation costs. This is a full‑time (37.5 hours per week), permanent position based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin. The appointment range is $69,931 to $74,609 per annum. Top of the range is $80,285. From time to time, you may be deployed to different colleges to suit the needs of the Division. This may include leave coverage, conference support, assistance with summer business such as “Hands on Otago”, Summer School, etc. The University is committed to meeting its obligations under the Children’s Act 2014 and the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021. Candidates who successfully make the final stages of the recruitment process will be required to undergo a police safety check.
