Job description

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds is one of Aotearoa New Zealand's most significant historic sites and a world-class tourism destination.

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Executive Chef to lead and inspire our hospitality operations on a six-month fixed-term contract.

The role is critical in preparing for our busiest season, including Waitangi Week

Our hospitality team operates across two kitchens – the Whare Waka Café, which delivers daily service to visitors, and a developing Events offering that caters to conferences, weddings and other functions of varying scale.

What you\'ll be doing

Reporting to the Head of Operations & Infrastructure, the Executive Chef will provide hands-on leadership and drive a comprehensive overhaul of our food service delivery.

This is a strategic opportunity to work with a passionate team to uplift, strengthen team capability, and deliver exceptional dining experiences for our manuhiri and community.

A key focus of this fixed-term role will be upskilling and training staff to step confidently into greater responsibility, ensuring sustainable growth and continuity of systems beyond the six-month contract.

You will be responsible for

Leading and developing the kitchen team to achieve consistently high standards

Overseeing food service across café and large-scale events.

Designing and implementing innovative, high-quality menus.

Establishing efficient, sustainable kitchen systems and processes.

Ensuring compliance with food safety, cost control, and operational requirements.

What you\'ll need to be successful

Our ideal candidate will be have the following skills & attributes :

Inspirational leader with the ability to build capability and culture in teams.

Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.

Proven experience as an Executive Chef or equivalent senior role in high-volume culinary kitchens.

Strong track record of leading operational overhauls and implementing sustainable systems.

Experience in staff training, mentoring, and team development.

Strong financial acumen with experience in menu costing, purchasing, and inventory management.

Knowledge of New Zealand food safety, health, and compliance standards

Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality food and service under pressure, particularly during major events.

Strategic thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.

Highly organised, resilient, and able to deliver results to tight deadlines.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, fostering collaboration across departments.

Commitment to upholding the mana and values of the Waitangi Treaty Grounds.
