Kaiako Matua – health & physical education

Full time, Fixed term, Start Date : 29 / 01 / 2026, End Date : 10 / 12 / 2027 (Replace for secondment)

Secondary (Years 7–15) / wharekura, Certified teacher. Health and physical education.

At Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura), our ākonga are always at the centre of what we do.

Ākonga at Te Kura choose subjects based on their passions and interests, accessing learning online supported by kaiako who inspire, and drive engagement. Alongside this, kaiako provide pastoral care and connect with ākonga through regular huinga ako — online or face to face — where learners connect, receive guidance, and strengthen their sense of belonging.

We are looking for a Kaiako Matua of health and physical education who understands, and is passionate about, current pedagogy and is able to deliver authentic, learning programmes in an increasingly student directed online environment.

The successful applicant will be part of a collaborative leadership team supporting innovative and inclusive curriculum design.

Kaiako Matua work collaboratively, you will have the opportunity to extend your leadership skills by taking on a variety of roles in the rōpū. Kaiako Matua are supported by the other Kaiako Matua in their rōpū, regionally by Regional Leaders of Learning, and nationally by National Leaders of Learning.

We are looking for a Kaiako Matua who is passionate about supporting ākonga, and who is excited at the opportunity to work in an environment where learning is highly personalised and flexible.

The successful applicant will have

  • New Zealand teacher registration and a current practising certificate
  • Passion for making a difference
  • Digitally literate
  • Like to work collaboratively and contribute as part of an integrated team
  • Use of culturally responsive and inclusive practices
  • Sound knowledge of NZ Curriculum and experience in teaching the stated curriculum area across different levels of learning
