Head of Digital Security at MIT / Unitec – we seek a visionary and execution-focused leader to guide cyber security strategy and operations across MIT / Unitec.
This role safeguards systems, platforms, networks and data, ensures regulatory and operational compliance, and helps build a modern, resilient security architecture that enables innovation.
The Head of Digital Security will play a strategic role in transforming security into a differentiator and potential revenue stream for MIT / Unitec.
This executive reports directly to the Director - Digital Strategy and Experience and will be a key member of MIT / Unitec.
Overview
The role leads enterprise security initiatives, drives secure-by-design principles, and supports digital transformation with a modern security environment.
Responsibilities
Driving enterprise-wide security strategy and embedding secure-by-design principles
Leading the modernisation of our security environment to support digital transformation
Owning cyber risk management and ensuring regulatory compliance
Championing a strong security culture across staff and learners
Advising executive leadership on resilience and emerging threats
Building scalable, cloud-native security architecture and enabling secure product delivery
This role requires strategic thinking, technical depth, and the ability to influence across the organisation.
About you
Significant leadership (10+ years) across cyber security domains in complex, federated organisations
Experienced in risk management, compliance frameworks, incident response, and security strategy
Knowledge of both cyber-relevant New Zealand compliance standards (e.g. NZISM, PSR, NZ Privacy Act 2020) and industry-recognised standards (e.g. ISO27001, CIS, NIST)
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present to executives and boards
Industry certifications (CISSP, CISM, CISA, ISO 27001 Lead Auditor / Implementer) are highly regarded
Proven executive leadership and team building skills
