We work alongside iwi, hapū, and hāpori Māori to advance environmental aspirations, support strategic projects, and strengthen long-term planning capability.

We are seeking an Intermediate to Senior Environmental Planner who is confident in both technical planning work and relationship-based engagement. The ideal candidate will bring strong experience across resource consents, environmental assessments, and strategic planning, with a commitment to mana-enhancing practice and indigenous-led planning approaches.

You will serve as the lead planner for Raurākau, Iarau’s subscription-based iwi and hapū advisory service. This includes :

  • Managing workflows for consents, permits, and related statutory processes.
  • Providing oversight and quality assurance for feedback pieces, submissions, plan changes, and statutory responses.
  • Supporting iwi / hapū to navigate CIA processes, Fast Track proposals, local government planning, and central government reforms.
  • Ensuring consistent communication, reporting, and delivery of high-quality advisory services.

2. Specific Project Work (Shared Across the Environmental Planning Team)

  • Cultural Impact Assessments (CIA) – planning support, report writing, engagement, technical review.
  • Fast Track Feedback – assisting iwi / hapū to understand proposals, impacts, and statutory pathways.
  • Iwi Environmental Management Plans – contributing to research, drafting, engagement, and policy development.
  • Master Planning & Spatial Planning – supporting design, mapping, analysis, and narrative development.
  • Policy and Plan Development – assisting with submissions, plan changes, and environmental policy advice.
  • General Environmental Planning Services aligned with Iarau’s Pou Taiao and Pou Arataki.
  • Required Experience

  • Background in consents and permits (essential).
  • Experience preparing resource consent applications or assessments of environmental effects (AEE).

  • Familiarity with local government processes and planning instruments (RMA, district / regional plans).
  • Demonstrated experience working with iwi / hapū or Māori organisations (preferred but not required).
  • Experience in environmental assessments, policy work, or strategic planning.
  • Essential Skills

  • Technical Writing – able to draft high-quality reports, assessments, submissions, and planning advice.
  • Engagement & Facilitation – comfortable working with iwi, hapū, and communities; able to support hui, wānanga, and workshops.
  • Communication & Coordination – strong verbal communication, task coordination, and stakeholder management.
  • Other Attributes

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a young, innovative, fast‑paced team.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and manage multiple moving projects at once.
  • Hard working and efficient.
  • Ability to complete tasks efficiently.
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Environmental Planning, Resource and Environmental Planning, or related discipline (required).
  • Intermediate level of te reo Māori (preferred).
  • Full NZ driver’s licence (preferred).
  • Why Join Iarau?

  • Work alongside iwi and hapū to advance environmental aspirations and build long‑term capacity.
  • Be part of a young, innovative team shaping new models of indigenous‑led planning.
  • Meaningful work that contributes to restoring the relationship between iwi and te taiao.
  • Opportunities for professional development, leadership, and creative project delivery.
