Job description

Wildlands are seeking full-time Ecological Restoration Team Members for our Auckland branch. This role is to work in small field teams to control pest plants, with some pest animal control and planting work from time to time. You could be based at either Albany, Grey Lynn, or Wiri, as appropriate.

The role is to undertake ecological restoration work which includes pest plant control, planting and pest animal control.

It is essential that you have a willingness to contribute and work in a team, are physically fit, and have a passion for working outdoors in all sorts of weather. The work involves the use of agrichemicals (herbicides), animal toxins (poisons), and traps on a regular basis. Regularly staying away up to week at a time in shared accommodation is an expectation of the role.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Prior experience working in pest plant control, planting and pest animal control is preferred but not essential
  • A positive attitude
  • A genuine interest in working in the outdoors and achieving conservation goals
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • A good work ethic, efficient and H&S conscious
  • A good level of fitness
  • Full NZ drivers’ licence (preferred).

On the job training and mentoring will be provided, including :

  • Agrichemical handling (mixing and application)
  • Pest plant control methods
  • Plant identification
  • Planting
  • Handheld GPS and use of mobile apps (e.g. TrapNZ and ArcGIS Field Maps)
  • Use and maintenance of hand tools.
  • Additional formal training will be provided as appropriate, and may include :

  • Growsafe
  • Controlled substance licence
  • Chainsaw
  • 4WD
  • LUV / Quad bike.
