The key focus of the Occupations & Third Party Oversight team is to ensure those entering the maritime system, or playing a role in it, are competent, performing their role consistently with the law, meeting ongoing standards and expectations, and are exited effectively when issues arise.

The team provides a stewardship role over people and third-party regulators operating in the system, providing technical, operational and practical knowledge advice and support around entry, competency, and exit, as well as expectation setting and support for third party activity.

It also plays a key role around support for alignment between regulatory standards and maritime schools and education providers.

Te tunga | The role

As a Senior Advisor Technical you'll be responsible for providing quality insights, leadership and advice.

You will have the opportunity to use your maritime operational expertise and technical knowledge to contribute to Maritime New Zealand's regulatory direction, carry out robust analysis, provide advice and make recommendations in line with Maritime New Zealand's regulatory strategic intentions.

A key focus for the Senior Advisor Technical will be on-going engagement, support and advisory services for recognised maritime surveyors.

You will work very closely with this group assessing competence, providing high-quality structured information and helping manage workforce development through identifying training needs, delivering seminars and other initiatives.

This role may require occasional travel within New Zealand.

  • Demonstrated experience working as a surveyor or in a similar role;
  • Proven experience and knowledge of the maritime industry at a senior level;

Good analytical skills and ability to problem-solve in complex environments, with experience using these to create insights that drive process improvement

  • Experience working collaboratively in a team of professional, technical and specialist staff;
  • Confident communicator with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across a range of stakeholders;
  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills including the ability to interpret highly technical issues for non-technical audiences;
  • Demonstrated success with projects and programmes of work involving multiple objectives, diverse stakeholders operating in dynamic environments.

    Salary range $119,318 – $145,572 depending on skills and experience plus up to 4% kiwisaver contributions.
